Sapalta: Lakefront Farm-to-Table Dining on Seneca Lake
There are plenty of places to enjoy a great meal in the Finger Lakes, but few put you quite as close to the water as Sapalta.
Located at Plum Point Lodge in Himrod, Sapalta sits directly along the western shore of Seneca Lake, roughly halfway between Watkins Glen and Geneva. With waterfront dining, Finger Lakes wines, locally sourced ingredients, and some seriously beautiful lake views, Sapalta is an excellent addition to a day exploring the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
Why Visit Sapalta?
The setting is the first thing you'll notice.
Sapalta isn't simply a restaurant near Seneca Lakeβthe restaurant is right on the lake. Outdoor tables overlook the water, and on a beautiful Finger Lakes evening, it is one of those places where you'll probably want to linger over another glass of wine rather than rush through dinner.
The atmosphere falls somewhere between a casual lakefront restaurant and a special-occasion dinner. You can come after a day of wine tasting without feeling overly dressed down, but the location is beautiful enough for a date night, anniversary dinner, or a memorable meal during your Finger Lakes getaway.
And if you're exploring Seneca Lake by boat, Sapalta gets even better: guests dining at the restaurant can use the property's dock when space is available.
Farm-to-Table in the Finger Lakes
Sapalta places a strong emphasis on using ingredients produced here in the Finger Lakes.
The restaurant works with approximately 30 local farms and producers, sourcing items such as locally raised meats, cheeses, milk, coffee, ice cream, and seasonal produce. Because of that approach, the menu changes throughout the season based on what is locally available.
Rather than visiting with one specific dish in mind, we recommend checking the current menu before your visit and seeing what the kitchen is featuring that week.
Recent offerings have included dishes ranging from smoked meatballs and charcuterie to stuffed salmon, pasta Bolognese, pierogi, burgers, and steak, along with seasonal specials.
A Finger Lakes-Focused Wine List
If you're spending the day exploring wine country, Sapalta keeps the experience local.
The restaurant's wine program focuses exclusively on Finger Lakes wines, with selections from producers around the region. Its beverage program also incorporates Finger Lakes spirits whenever possible.
That makes Sapalta an especially nice dinner stop after a day of wine tastingβyou can revisit a familiar winery or discover another Finger Lakes producer without making another tasting-room stop.
Don't Overlook Brunch
Sapalta isn't just a dinner destination.
Sunday brunch currently runs from 10:00 AMβ2:00 PM, offering another way to experience the lakefront setting.
Recent brunch menus have included options such as eggs Benedict, shakshuka, pancakes, salads, burgers, and other seasonal dishes.
Brunch can be an especially good option if you're planning a slower morning before heading out to explore wineries around Seneca Lake.
Try to Get a Table Outside
When the weather cooperates, outdoor seating is the way to go.
Sapalta's lakefront location is a major part of the experience, particularly later in the day when you can settle in with a cocktail or glass of Finger Lakes wine and enjoy the view across Seneca Lake.
Outdoor tables are limited and weather-dependent, so requesting outdoor seating doesn't necessarily guarantee it.
For a summer weekend or a beautiful fall evening, we'd recommend making your reservation well in advance.
Make It Part of a Seneca Lake Wine Day
Sapalta's location makes it particularly convenient if you're exploring wineries along Route 14 and the western side of Seneca Lake.
Rather than finishing your tastings and immediately driving back toward Hammondsport, consider making Sapalta the final destination of the day.
A great Finger Lakes itinerary could look something like:
Morning: Head toward Watkins Glen and begin exploring Seneca Lake.
Afternoon: Work your way north along the western Seneca Lake Wine Trail, stopping at a few wineries along Route 14.
Late Afternoon: Slow things down and enjoy the scenery rather than squeezing in another tasting.
Evening: Finish with dinner and a bottle of Finger Lakes wine overlooking Seneca Lake at Sapalta.
It's a much more relaxing ending to a wine-trail day than trying to fit one last winery into the schedule.

Is Sapalta Worth Visiting?
We think Sapalta is at its best when you treat the setting as much a part of the experience as the meal itself.
Come for a relaxed dinner, order a bottle of Finger Lakes wine, request an outdoor table if the weather looks good, and give yourself time to actually enjoy being beside Seneca Lake.
For guests exploring beyond Keuka Lake, Sapalta is also a great reminder of why staying near Hammondsport makes such a good home base. You can spend the day discovering the wineries, waterfalls, and communities surrounding Seneca Lakeβand then retreat back to the quiet woods at The Hideaway at the end of the night.
It's exactly the kind of Finger Lakes day we love: wine country, local food, a table by the lake, and nowhere you need to rush off to next.
